A 19-year-old Brampton driver faces stunt driving-related charges after Ontario Provincial Police allegedly clocked his vehicle at 221 km/h west of Newmarket early Tuesday.

The OPP Highway Safety Division tweeted that the driver had been stopped near Hwy. 400 southbound at Hwy. 9 around 12:50 a.m.

“He didn’t provide any excuse,” Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said. “Just after midnight, going down the 400, clocked at 221 km/h.

Officers were doing speed enforcement overnight and that was the most egregious speed that came across. They hadn’t seen a speed like that for a while.”

Schmidt said the stunt-driving charge carries with it under the Highway Traffic Act an automatic licence suspension, vehicle impoundment, and penalties that can go up to $10,000, “but that’s up to the courts to the decide.”
